Alnicola is a genus of fungi often associated with tree diseases, particularly affecting alder species (Alnus). While these fungi primarily function as saprotrophs in the forest ecosystem, they can become opportunistic pathogens when trees are stressed by environmental factors or mechanical injuries.
The disease is caused by the colonization of the fungus Alnicola within the tree's bark and vascular system. It is characterized as a wood-decaying infection, where the mycelium gradually breaks down plant tissues, eventually hindering the tree's ability to transport water and essential nutrients from the roots to the canopy.
Key symptoms of an Alnicola infection include the presence of mushroom-like fruiting bodies appearing at the base of the tree trunk or on exposed roots. As the infection progresses, the bark may exhibit visible lesions or cracking, and the canopy often shows signs of chlorosis, leaf drop, and dieback of the primary branches.
Development and spread of the fungus are favored by wet, humid conditions and poor drainage, which weaken the tree's immune response. Spores are primarily dispersed through the air and water, quickly colonizing any fissures or wounds in the bark during periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures.
The harmful impact of Alnicola includes the reduction of overall tree vigor and premature mortality of forest or ornamental specimens. Effective control involves rigorous sanitation practices, such as pruning infected branches, ensuring proper soil drainage to avoid waterlogging, and applying protective fungicides to wounds to prevent the entry of fungal spores.
