Onion leaf blight, caused by the fungus Alternaria allii, is a destructive plant disease that impacts the yield and quality of Allium crops. This pathogen is known for causing characteristic leaf spotting that leads to tissue necrosis and premature defoliation of the crop.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include bulb onions, leeks, garlic, and shallots. The disease is most severe in regions with temperate climates where frequent periods of high humidity and rainfall occur during the growing season, which facilitate the rapid spread of fungal spores.

Infection symptoms typically appear on older leaves as small, water-soaked spots that rapidly expand into elongated, elliptical lesions. As the disease progresses, the centers of the spots may turn white or grey, and under humid conditions, they become covered with a dark, velvety layer of conidiophores and conidia.

These conditions are ideal for the germination of spores and the secondary spread of the infection throughout the field, often exacerbated by wind and irrigation splashes.
