Description

The term Alternaria botrytis is frequently used to describe a dual-pathogen complex involving both Alternaria species and Botrytis cinerea. These are aggressive fungal pathogens that often co-infect plants, particularly those stressed by environmental factors or mechanical injury, leading to significant physiological decline.

These diseases have a very broad host range, affecting various vegetables, fruits, ornamental plants, and field crops. They can attack any part of the plant, including leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits, often causing pre-harvest blight and post-harvest rot that results in severe economic losses for growers worldwide.

Symptoms typically manifest as necrotic spots with concentric rings, which are characteristic of Alternaria infection, alongside fuzzy gray mold growth on decaying tissues associated with Botrytis. As the infection progresses, the tissues become water-soaked, dark, and soft, eventually leading to complete disintegration of the affected plant parts.

The spread and severity of these diseases are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, and mild temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. The fungi survive in crop debris, infested soil, and weeds, releasing spores that are easily carried by wind, water splashes, and farm equipment.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include practicing proper crop rotation, removing and destroying infected plant debris, improving air circulation within crop canopies, and monitoring humidity levels in greenhouses. Additionally, applying preventive fungicides is crucial to curb outbreaks during periods of high disease pressure.
