Description
The causal agent of black spot disease is the fungus Alternaria brassicae, a serious pathogen affecting many cultivated and wild species of the Brassicaceae family. This fungus survives in crop residues, soil, and seeds, acting as a persistent source of primary inoculum that can infect crops throughout the entire growing season.
The disease has a broad host range, infecting cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, rapeseed (canola), mustard, and various root vegetables. It is considered one of the most economically damaging foliar diseases for oilseed rape globally, often occurring in conjunction with other pathogens like Alternaria raphani.
Initial symptoms include small, circular, dark-brown or black spots on leaves, stems, and seed pods. A hallmark sign is the appearance of concentric rings within these spots, which often develop a velvety, olive-black fungal growth under high humidity. In severe cases, extensive spotting leads to chlorosis, tissue necrosis, and premature leaf drop.
The development of the fungus is favored by warm weather, with optimal temperatures between 20°C and 25°C, coupled with high moisture. Rainfall, heavy dew, or overhead irrigation promotes the spread of conidia by wind and water splash. Crowded plant spacing and poor field drainage significantly accelerate the progression of the disease within the crop canopy.
The economic impact of Alternaria brassicae is substantial, as it leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity and stunted growth. The most severe damage occurs on seed pods, where infection causes premature pod shattering and significant loss of grain yield. Additionally, infected seeds exhibit poor germination rates, posing a risk for future planting cycles.
- Utilize certified disease-free seeds and apply effective seed dressings.
- Practice a crop rotation of at least 3 years away from susceptible brassica crops.
- Remove and destroy crop debris to reduce the overwintering inoculum.
- Control brassicaceous weeds that act as alternative hosts for the pathogen.
- Apply preventative or curative fungicides, such as strobilurins or triazoles, during critical growth stages.
