Description

The disease known as Alternaria leaf blight is caused by the fungus Alternaria cucumerina. This pathogen is a significant threat to agricultural production worldwide, particularly in regions with high humidity and warm temperatures. It spreads through wind-borne spores, rain splash, and contaminated agricultural tools or clothing.

Cucurbitaceous crops, including cucumbers, melons, watermelons, pumpkins, and squashes, are the primary hosts of this fungus. The pathogen can attack plants at all growth stages, although the symptoms are often most severe during the rapid vegetative growth phase and the onset of fruit development, when plants are physiologically stressed.

The initial symptoms appear as small, circular, water-soaked spots on the leaves, which gradually enlarge to form large, brown, necrotic lesions. A diagnostic feature of this blight is the appearance of distinct concentric rings within the spots, giving them a target-like appearance. As the disease progresses, leaves curl, wither, and eventually die, leading to extensive defoliation.

Development of the fungus is highly favored by environmental conditions such as high relative humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. Frequent dew, light rain, or overhead irrigation creates a moisture film on the leaves, which is essential for spore germination and infection. Under favorable conditions, the disease can spread rapidly throughout the entire plantation.

The economic impact of Alternaria cucumerina is substantial, as premature leaf loss limits the photosynthetic capacity of the plants. This reduction in energy leads to poor fruit set, stunted fruit growth, and reduced sugar content, rendering the harvest unmarketable. Severe infections can result in total crop failure if management strategies are not implemented promptly.

  • Implement a crop rotation cycle, avoiding cucurbits for at least 2–3 years to break the infection cycle.
  • Remove and destroy all infected plant debris to eliminate primary inoculum sources.
  • Select resistant cultivars where available and use high-quality, disease-free certified seeds.
  • Apply preventative fungicides based on weather forecasts, particularly during periods of warm and wet conditions.
