It persists in soil debris, seeds, and occasionally on alternative host plants, making it a persistent challenge for agricultural production across various climatic zones.

This disease primarily impacts members of the Cucurbitaceae family, including cucumbers, melons, squashes, and watermelons. The economic impact is substantial, as the disease causes rapid defoliation, which limits the plant's ability to photosynthesize. This leads to reduced fruit size, premature ripening, and overall yield suppression, often rendering the crop unmarketable if left untreated.

Symptoms and signs
Initial infection appears as small, water-soaked spots on the older, lower leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often developing distinct concentric rings—a characteristic sign of the pathogen. Eventually, these lesions merge, leading to the yellowing and drying out of the foliage. In humid conditions, a dark, velvety layer of conidia may be observed on the underside of the leaves.

Conditions for development
The development of Alternaria cucurbitae is heavily dependent on moisture and temperature. High relative humidity and warm temperatures (20–28°C) are conducive to rapid spore production and germination. The pathogen thrives when leaf surfaces remain wet for extended periods, frequently following rain events or overhead irrigation, which facilitates the spread of spores to healthy plant parts.

Effective management requires a combination of integrated pest management practices:

  • Practice long-term crop rotation with non-cucurbit crops to break the pathogen lifecycle.
  • Remove and destroy all infected plant material after harvest to reduce inoculum levels.
  • Maintain proper plant spacing to improve air circulation and reduce leaf wetness duration.
  • Apply preventative fungicidal sprays when weather conditions favor disease outbreaks.
  • Use certified disease-free seeds to prevent the introduction of the fungus into the field.
