The causal agent of carrot leaf blight is the fungus Alternaria dauci, a major pathogen affecting Apiaceae crops worldwide. It is considered one of the most destructive diseases in carrot production, causing significant leaf tissue damage which directly impacts the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant.

Symptoms typically begin on older leaves as small, yellow-to-brown lesions that enlarge and become dark brown or black with a distinct yellow halo. As the infection progresses, the lesions merge, leading to the collapse and death of the leaf blade. In advanced stages, the petiole can also become girdled, causing the foliage to wither prematurely.

The development of the disease is favored by moderate to warm temperatures and prolonged periods of leaf wetness or high humidity. The fungus produces conidia that are disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and irrigation water. The pathogen is seed-borne and can also persist in infected plant debris left in the soil for several seasons.

The economic impact of Alternaria dauci is significant, particularly due to yield reduction and poor marketability. Since the foliage is destroyed, harvesting operations become more complicated, often requiring manual labor or additional equipment. Furthermore, plants weakened by the blight are more susceptible to other secondary infections and storage rots.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control. Farmers should prioritize long rotations to non-host crops and the use of certified, disease-free seed. Implementing a prophylactic fungicide spray program during periods of high disease pressure is critical. Additionally, deep plowing to bury crop residues helps reduce the primary inoculum load in the field.
