Alternaria limicola is a fungal pathogen belonging to the genus Alternaria, responsible for causing necrotic leaf spots and blights in a variety of plant species. As a facultative parasite, this fungus can survive on decaying plant material, making it a persistent challenge in agricultural fields and greenhouse environments. It is characterized by its ability to produce abundant conidia under fluctuating weather conditions.
The host range of Alternaria limicola includes various solanaceous crops, legumes, and certain ornamental plants. Infection typically starts in the lower canopy, where humidity remains higher and air circulation is often restricted. If left untreated, the pathogen can spread to the upper leaves, stems, and even fruits, leading to premature senescence of the foliage.
Symptoms are identified by the formation of small, dark brown or black lesions that often exhibit concentric rings. These spots may merge as the disease progresses, eventually causing large areas of necrotic tissue. In high-humidity conditions, a dark, velvety mold growth, representing the spore-producing structures of the fungus, can be observed on the surface of the lesions.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Rain splashes and irrigation water play a key role in dispersing conidia from the soil or lower leaves to healthy plant parts. Wind-borne transmission also contributes significantly to the rapid spread of the pathogen across large areas.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize the reliance on chemical treatments. Preventive strategies and control methods are essential for minimizing losses:
- Crop rotation with non-host species to break the disease cycle.
- Sanitation by removing and destroying infected plant debris.
- Application of preventative fungicides during periods of high humidity.
- Optimizing irrigation practices to avoid wetting the foliage.
- Ensuring adequate plant spacing to promote airflow and reduce canopy humidity.
