Alternaria leaf spot of sesame

The causative agent of this plant disease is the fungus Alternaria sesamicola, which belongs to the group of deuteromycetes (imperfect fungi). It is a significant infectious disease affecting sesame plants throughout their entire lifecycle, causing substantial yield losses in regions where this crop is cultivated commercially.

The primary host for this pathogen is the sesame plant (Sesamum indicum). The fungus affects all aerial parts of the plant, including cotyledons, true leaves, stems, flower buds, and seed capsules. The most severe damage occurs when the reproductive organs are infected, which compromises both the quantity and quality of the final seed yield.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, dark brown or black lesions on the leaves, which gradually enlarge and exhibit characteristic concentric rings. In high-humidity environments, a velvety, olive-green fungal growth often appears on the surface of the spots, representing the conidial sporulation of the pathogen. Severe infections often lead to premature defoliation and stem necrosis.

The development of Alternaria sesamicola is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically warm and humid weather. The optimal temperature for conidial germination ranges from 22°C to 28°C. The pathogen spreads rapidly through wind-borne spores, rain splash, and mechanical transmission. The fungus persists in the soil via infected crop debris and can also be seed-borne.

The impact of this disease is multifaceted: it reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, resulting in stunted growth and weakened vitality. Infected capsules may crack prematurely, exposing the seeds to further contamination and reducing their oil content and marketability. Management strategies focus on an integrated approach, including the use of certified disease-free seeds, appropriate crop rotation, sanitation of fields, and the timely application of fungicides during peak risk periods.
