It frequently affects cereals (such as wheat and barley), vegetables like tomatoes and potatoes, legumes, and oilseed crops including sunflowers. Its ability to infect both foliage, stems, and fruits makes it a persistent threat across various agricultural sectors.
Symptoms and signs of infection
The hallmark of an Alternaria tenuissima infection is the appearance of small, circular to irregular dark brown spots that often exhibit concentric rings. As the fungus spreads, these lesions coalesce, leading to extensive tissue necrosis, leaf chlorosis, and premature senescence. Under humid conditions, a velvety dark-olive to black layer of conidiophores and conidia becomes visible on the affected areas.
Development and dispersal conditions
The disease thrives in warm and humid climates, with optimal development occurring at temperatures between 20°C and 28°C and high relative humidity. Conidia are easily dispersed through wind currents, splashing rain, and irrigation water. The fungus persists in the environment via survival structures (mycelium and conidia) found in plant debris, infested seeds, and topsoil, ensuring its presence across seasons.

The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, lower yields, and poorer storage quality of harvested products. Effective disease management requires an integrated approach:
