Early blight, caused by the fungus Alternaria solani (sometimes classified within the Alternaria tomato complex), is a prevalent and destructive fungal disease affecting tomato plants. The primary host plants include tomatoes, potatoes, and other members of the Solanaceae family. The fungus can persist in the soil for several years and survives on infected plant debris, making it a constant threat to subsequent plantings if proper field sanitation is ignored.
