The disease known as wheat leaf blight is caused by the fungus Alternaria triticina. This pathogen is a significant concern in cereal production, as it affects the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant by colonizing the leaf tissue and causing necrotic lesions that reduce the plant's ability to produce grain mass effectively.

The primary host for this fungus is wheat (Triticum aestivum), though it can occasionally affect other grasses. The infection cycle is highly dependent on environmental conditions, making it particularly destructive in warm, humid regions where temperature fluctuations and moisture levels facilitate the rapid spread of fungal spores across the field.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, chlorotic, oval-shaped spots on the lower leaves, which eventually turn light brown or dark reddish-brown with yellowish margins. As the disease progresses, these lesions enlarge and coalesce, eventually covering large portions of the leaf blade. Under high humidity, a dark, velvety mycelial growth may be observed on the affected necrotic areas.

The development of Alternaria triticina is favored by temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C and the presence of prolonged leaf wetness. The pathogen survives in the soil on infected plant debris and is transmitted via seeds or airborne conidia, which spread rapidly during periods of intermittent rain, especially during the heading and grain-filling stages.
