The causative agent of this disease is the pathogenic fungus Alternaria yali-inficiens, a species primarily known for its ability to infect pear trees. This pathogen acts as a necrotrophic parasite, causing tissue cell death and significant fruit damage in commercial orchards.
This fungus specifically attacks pear trees, with a high incidence rate observed in Asian pear varieties and certain hybrids. The infection primarily targets leaves and fruits, but under favorable conditions, it can also affect young shoots, leading to reduced vigor of the tree.
Symptoms appear as small, dark brown or black lesions that expand into necrotic patches. On fruit, these spots become sunken and may develop a dark, velvety mycelial growth of the fungus. If left unchecked, these lesions can merge, causing the fruit to rot prematurely or become unmarketable.
The development of the disease is highly correlated with environmental factors, particularly extended periods of leaf wetness and high humidity. Fungal spores are spread by wind, rain splashes, and insects, making it difficult to control once the disease has established itself in the orchard canopy.
