Description

The fungus Alternariaster helianthi is the primary pathogen responsible for Alternaria leaf spot of sunflower. This fungal disease is a major concern for sunflower growers worldwide, as it can cause significant damage to the foliage, stems, and seed heads throughout the crop cycle, leading to early senescence.

Sunflower is the principal host for this pathogen, although it can occasionally infect other wild plants within the Asteraceae family. The ability of the fungus to survive on crop debris ensures its presence in the field environment from one season to the next, posing a chronic threat to sunflower production in susceptible regions.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, brown-to-black spots on the leaves, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the disease progresses, these lesions enlarge and coalesce, resulting in widespread necrosis of the leaf tissue. When environmental conditions are conducive, the pathogen also attacks stems and petioles, causing elongated black lesions that compromise the plant's structural integrity.

Warm and humid weather conditions are ideal for the development and dissemination of the disease. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C combined with high humidity or rainfall promote the rapid production of conidia. These spores are spread through wind and rain splash, allowing the fungus to move quickly across a field and infect adjacent healthy tissues.

The impact of Alternaria leaf spot is primarily observed in reduced yield and oil quality. By destroying photosynthetic tissue, the disease prevents the plant from filling seeds properly, which leads to lower kernel weight and lower oil content. In severe cases, the lodging of infected plants can make mechanical harvesting difficult and increase post-harvest losses.

Preventive strategies involve a combination of agrotechnical and chemical measures. Rotating crops with non-host species, deep plowing to bury infected stubble, and selecting resistant or tolerant hybrids are fundamental components of management. During periods of high disease pressure, targeted fungicide applications are recommended to protect the crop during the most vulnerable vegetative stages.
