Description

Amanita curtipes is a basidiomycete fungus that, under certain environmental conditions, can negatively impact the health of woody plant root systems. In forestry and arboriculture, it is monitored as an organism capable of causing physiological stress and subsequent root degradation in susceptible host trees.

The disease is caused by the fungal mycelium colonizing the rhizospheric zone. Depending on host vigor and soil composition, the fungus can shift from a symbiotic interaction to a pathogenic one, utilizing nutrients from the host's roots and disrupting the normal uptake of water and essential minerals.

The primary hosts for Amanita curtipes are various hardwood species and some coniferous trees grown in forest nurseries or established plantations. Plants situated in compacted or poorly drained soils are significantly more susceptible to the encroachment of this fungal pathogen.

Symptoms of an infection include a gradual decline in canopy density, yellowing of leaves (chlorosis), and a stunted growth rate. Below ground, root systems may show signs of tissue necrosis and the presence of fungal mats that inhibit the development of fine feeder roots necessary for nutrient absorption.
