Description

Amauroderma is a genus of polypore fungi that acts as a significant pathogen in woody plants. These fungi are primarily responsible for white rot, a form of decay that aggressively degrades both cellulose and lignin, leading to severe structural damage and the eventual death of the host tree.

The disease is caused by basidiomycete fungi that colonize the root systems or the base of the stems. As the infection progresses, the fungal mycelium penetrates the xylem, disrupting the transportation of water and nutrients, which ultimately leads to the physiological decline of the plant.

Target species include a wide variety of tropical and subtropical trees, including economically important crops. Host trees often show no outward signs of infection for several years until the pathogen has caused significant internal decay, making early detection extremely difficult for foresters and growers.

Symptoms of an Amauroderma infection typically include a thinning canopy, stunted growth, and visible fungal fruiting bodies appearing at the base of the trunk or on the major roots. These fruiting bodies, which may be leathery or woody in texture, serve as the primary source of spore dispersal in the environment.

High humidity and soil moisture are critical factors that facilitate the growth and spread of these fungi. Management strategies focus on strict sanitation, which involves the removal and destruction of infected trees, including their roots, to prevent the pathogen from spreading through soil contact. Maintaining tree health through proper fertilization and avoiding mechanical injuries during cultivation are essential components of an effective prevention program.
