Amblyosporiosis is a fungal disease affecting various plant species, caused by pathogens belonging to the genus Amblyosporium. These fungi are typically characterized as opportunistic mold pathogens, primarily targeting weakened plant tissues or fruits that have sustained physical injuries or are stressed by environmental factors.

The host range of this disease includes a wide array of agricultural crops, particularly vegetables and fruit-bearing plants. It is particularly problematic during the ripening stage and during post-harvest storage, where the fungus can rapidly colonize damaged surfaces and penetrate deeper tissues, resulting in soft rot.

Clinical symptoms appear as a velvety, fuzzy coating that ranges in color from white to greyish-yellow. As the infection progresses, the underlying plant tissue undergoes rapid biochemical degradation, becoming soft, discolored, and eventually unfit for consumption or market sale due to the rapid spread of the fungal mycelium.

The development and spread of Amblyosporium spores are heavily dependent on high relative humidity levels and moderate temperatures. The fungus propagates through airborne spores, water droplets, and direct contact with infected debris or contaminated handling equipment, making poorly ventilated greenhouses highly susceptible environments.

Effective management and protection against this disease require a combination of preventative measures and strict sanitary protocols:

  • Ensuring proper air circulation and spacing within crop rows to prevent humidity buildup.
  • Removing and destroying all infected plant residues to eliminate inoculum sources.
  • Maintaining dry and well-ventilated conditions in storage and storage facilities.
