Ambrosiella cleistominuta is a microscopic fungus primarily known as a symbiont of ambrosia beetles. This pathogen is introduced into the sapwood of deciduous trees by the beetles while they excavate galleries. It functions as an essential food source for the beetle larvae, but for the host tree, it serves as a significant pathogen that colonizes vascular tissues and triggers rapid physiological decline.
The host range of this fungus includes various deciduous tree species that are susceptible to wood-boring insects. Once the beetle introduces the fungal spores into the tree, the mycelium begins to colonize the xylem vessels. This colonization eventually leads to a blockage of the water-conducting system, causing a localized or systemic wilting that characterizes the infection process.
Symptoms of the infection are often subtle at first. Growers should look for entry holes on the bark, sometimes accompanied by boring dust, which indicates beetle activity. Inside the wood, dark or black staining typically appears around the beetle galleries, representing the fungal growth. Externally, the tree canopy may show signs of yellowing, branch dieback, and eventually, total tree mortality.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on the environmental suitability for the vector beetles. Warm conditions facilitate beetle flights and subsequent colonization. The fungus thrives within the moist environment of the beetle tunnels, allowing it to multiply rapidly and ensure its transfer to new host trees, which contributes to the patchiness and intensity of the infestation in forests.
