Description
Ambrosiella nakashimae is a pathogenic fungus that maintains a symbiotic relationship with specific species of ambrosia beetles, most notably Euwallacea interjectus. This fungus colonizes the woody tissues of host plants, transported directly by the beetles that drill galleries into the tree trunk and branches. It causes systemic vascular dysfunction, often leading to significant damage in affected plant species.
The host range of Ambrosiella nakashimae primarily includes various broad-leaved trees, with a notable impact on species such as common fig (Ficus carica). The disease is increasingly identified in regions where the vector beetles have established new populations, posing a risk to both commercial orchards and ornamental plantations.
Visual symptoms of the disease are characterized by the presence of tiny entry holes on the tree bark, often surrounded by sap or gum exudates. Inside, the vascular tissue shows clear signs of discoloration and necrosis. As the fungal mycelium spreads and clogs the tree's xylem vessels, foliage begins to wilt, yellow, and drop prematurely, eventually leading to the death of affected limbs.
The spread and development of the fungus are dictated by the beetle's life cycle. Spores are housed in specialized organs within the beetles known as mycangia. When the beetle bores into a tree, the fungus is introduced, finding optimal conditions in the moisture-rich environment of the wood to proliferate. Warm and humid conditions generally exacerbate the spread and colonization rate of the fungus.
Effective management and prevention strategies rely on a combination of silvicultural and chemical controls:
