The Amorphothecaceae family encompasses a group of ascomycetous fungi that serve as causative agents for various pathological conditions in agricultural and forest crops. The most notable representative, Amorphotheca resinae, represents a significant concern not only for botanical health but also for industrial logistics and product storage.
The type of disease caused by this family is classified as a mycosis. The pathogens actively develop within plant tissues, leading to the decomposition of organic matter and the destruction of cellular structures. While often acting as saprotrophs, they can transition to a parasitic lifecycle under favorable conditions, compromising the immunity of weakened plants.
These fungi affect a wide range of woody species and can be found on cultivated plants that have sustained mechanical damage. A specific characteristic is their ability to develop on substrates containing hydrocarbons, which poses a substantial risk during the storage of plant products and timber in high-humidity environments.
