Amphinema byssoides is a basidiomycetous fungus recognized in forestry and forest pathology as a pathogen that contributes to the decay of seedlings in nurseries. It functions as a facultative parasite, often thriving in environments where moisture levels are consistently high and soil drainage is suboptimal.
The primary host plants susceptible to this fungus include various coniferous species such as pine, spruce, and fir seedlings. The disease is particularly destructive in nurseries where young plants are grown in close proximity, allowing the fungal mycelium to spread rapidly from one seedling to another.
The characteristic symptom is the development of a dense, white, felt-like mycelium covering the root collar and the soil surface at the base of the plant. This fungal layer suffocates the seedling, leading to necrosis of the stem tissue, wilting, and eventually the death of the entire plant due to structural and physiological failure.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the infection cycle. High humidity, poor air circulation, and low temperatures facilitate the aggressive colonization of the fungus. The pathogen can survive in organic matter within the soil for extended periods, making it a persistent threat in established nursery settings.
