Description

Amphiporthe is a fungal disease caused by species within the genus Amphiporthe, which belongs to the order Diaporthales. This pathogen primarily acts as a facultative parasite, attacking the bark and vascular tissues of various deciduous trees. The disease is characterized by the development of necrotic cankers that impair the tree's vital physiological functions.

Host plants typically include hazelnut (Corylus), maple species, and other hardwoods. The fungus enters the plant host through wounds, such as pruning cuts, frost cracks, or mechanical damage caused by wind and insects. Once established, the mycelium invades the cortical layers and the cambium, disrupting the translocation of nutrients and water throughout the woody plant.

The primary clinical signs of Amphiporthe infection include the formation of sunken, discolored patches on the bark. As the disease progresses, these areas become necrotic, and the bark often cracks or peels away. In severe stages, the pathogen produces small fruiting bodies (perithecia) that protrude through the bark, releasing spores that can infect neighboring trees during periods of moisture.

Environmental factors play a critical role in the development and spread of this disease. Excessive moisture, high humidity, and relatively warm temperatures provide optimal conditions for spore germination and colonization. Orchards with poor airflow, caused by lack of pruning or dense planting, are significantly more susceptible to outbreaks of this fungal infection.

Management and prevention strategy must focus on sanitation and physical exclusion. It is essential to remove and incinerate all infected branches during the dormant season to reduce the inoculum level. Proper pruning techniques, coupled with the application of wound dressings, help prevent secondary infections. In commercial plantations, the application of copper-based fungicides may be necessary to manage spore dispersal and protect healthy tissue.
