Description

Amphiporthe raveneliana is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Ascomycota division, known for causing necrotic lesions and cankers on the bark of woody plants. As an opportunistic pathogen, it primarily affects the vascular system and cambium, severely hindering the overall vigor and physiological processes of the host plant.

The primary hosts of this fungus are various hardwood species, with a particular affinity for members of the genus Quercus. The pathogen invades the plant through damaged tissue, establishing itself in the living bark and wood layers, which eventually leads to the formation of localized dead areas.

Symptoms are usually identified by the presence of depressed, discolored patches on the bark, which evolve into sunken cankers. As the fungus develops, it produces fruiting bodies that emerge through the bark surface as minute black dots. Foliage above the infected area often exhibits signs of chlorosis, wilting, or premature shedding as the water supply becomes restricted.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity, stagnant air, and prolonged rainfall are major drivers for the dispersal and germination of fungal spores. The disease is frequently spread through wind-blown spores and rain splash, which easily enter the host through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or mechanical abrasions caused by wind or pests.
