Amylostereum chailletii is a wood-decay fungus that belongs to the order Russulales. It is primarily known for causing white rot in the timber of various coniferous tree species. The fungus is not only a saprotroph living on dead wood but can also act as a pathogen, establishing itself in living trees through mechanical damage or symbiotic insect activity. Its presence significantly impacts forest health and timber quality.
The host range of Amylostereum chailletii includes various conifers, with fir (Abies), spruce (Picea), and pine (Pinus) being the most common targets. The fungus is notorious for its biological association with wood wasps (Siricidae), such as the Sirex species. The female wasp introduces the fungal spores into the tree during the oviposition process, facilitating a direct pathway for the infection to develop deep within the tree trunk.
Symptoms of the disease are typically observed through the presence of leathery, crust-like fruiting bodies on the bark of infected trees. Internally, the fungus causes the wood to lose its structural integrity, turning it pale, spongy, and fibrous. This condition, known as white rot, drastically reduces the commercial value of the wood and makes the tree prone to snapping during storm events due to significant loss of strength in the core.
The development of the fungus is highly dependent on humidity and temperature, favoring damp environments where wood remains moist. The most critical factor in its spread is the symbiotic relationship with wood wasps. Because the fungus thrives in the galleries created by the insects, it can quickly establish itself within a tree’s xylem, spreading vertically and horizontally through the heartwood as the larvae feed and the mycelium grows.
