Amylostereum laevigatum is a species of wood-decay fungus known for causing white rot in various conifer species. Unlike some aggressive pathogens, it acts primarily as a necrotrophic parasite or saprotroph, colonizing damaged or weakened wood and gradually breaking down the cellulose and lignin components of the tree's internal structure.

The host range of this fungus primarily includes species from the Taxus and Juniperus genera. It often enters the host through wounds in the bark, such as pruning cuts, cracks caused by environmental stress, or holes created by wood-boring insects. Once the fungus has established a mycelial network within the heartwood, it effectively compromises the structural integrity of the plant.

Key symptoms include the appearance of resupinate, leathery fruiting bodies on the surface of the bark, which typically appear in late summer or autumn. These structures are usually smooth or slightly tuberculate and range in color from pale cream to ochraceous. Internally, the wood becomes bleached, fibrous, and brittle, often displaying characteristic white streaks caused by the enzymatic activity of the fungal hyphae.

The proliferation of Amylostereum laevigatum is highly dependent on humidity levels and the availability of vulnerable host sites. The basidiospores are spread via wind currents or by contact with infected timber or pruning tools. In nursery settings, dense spacing and high moisture contribute significantly to the rapid spread of the fungus among susceptible container-grown conifers.

Effective management and prevention strategies revolve around sanitation and proper tree maintenance. This includes the prompt removal and destruction of infected wood to prevent spore dissemination, disinfecting pruning equipment after every use, and protecting tree wounds with wound dressings. Promoting overall tree health through adequate spacing and fertilization helps the plant defend itself against initial colonization.
