The Ancylistaceae family belongs to the order Entomophthorales. While these fungi are famously known for being pathogens of insects, their presence in the soil environment significantly intersects with plant pathology. They function as microorganisms that can inhabit the rhizosphere, occasionally shifting their host range to include the root tissues of various agricultural crops.

The disease mechanism involves the colonization of subterranean plant parts by the fungal mycelium. This is classified as a root-associated mycological disorder.
