Recognized as a significant forest and horticultural pathogen, this fungus acts as a wood-decay agent that colonizes stressed hosts, eventually leading to structural failure and tree mortality.

The host range is primarily broadleaf trees, with specific susceptibility noted in oaks, beeches, and various nut-bearing species. The pathogen specifically targets trees that have been compromised by environmental stress, such as prolonged drought, pest infestations, or mechanical injury, which facilitate fungal entry.

The primary clinical sign of infection is the emergence of distinctive, carbonaceous, crust-like stromata on the bark surface, which often appear black and textured like burnt wood. Beneath these formations, the host tissue shows advanced degradation, typically associated with significant cambial death and decay of the sapwood.

The life cycle of the fungus is heavily dependent on favorable humidity levels and the availability of colonization sites on the host.
