Annulohypoxylon stygium is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Hypoxylaceae family. It primarily functions as a wood-decay fungus, often behaving as an opportunistic pathogen that colonizes the trunks and branches of weakened or stressed deciduous trees, leading to white rot of the woody tissues.
Host plants typically include a variety of hardwood species, such as oak, beech, and birch. The fungus demonstrates a high preference for trees that have been compromised by environmental stressors, such as prolonged drought, freeze-thaw damage, or previous infestation by boring insects, which create entry points for the fungal spores.
The primary symptom of infection is the appearance of small, hard, black, carbonaceous stromata on the bark or exposed wood, which serve as the reproductive structures of the fungus. As the infection progresses, the underlying wood undergoes chemical decomposition, resulting in a loss of mechanical strength and stability, which can lead to hazardous limb breakage.
The development and spread of Annulohypoxylon stygium are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures, which favor spore dispersal and germination. Rain splash and wind are the main vectors for spore transmission, enabling the fungus to infect fresh wounds on the tree's surface rapidly.
