The Antennulariellaceae family comprises various fungal species known for causing sooty mold, a condition that manifests as dark, powdery coatings on plant surfaces. These fungi are classified as epiphytic, meaning they live on the surface of leaves, stems, and fruits. They are generally considered non-pathogenic in the traditional sense, as they do not penetrate host tissues, but they act as significant plant health inhibitors.

These fungi primarily affect trees and shrubs, including citrus, roses, and various orchard crops. Their presence is almost always secondary to infestations of sap-sucking insects like aphids, scales, mealybugs, and whiteflies. These pests secrete a sugary substance called honeydew, which serves as the essential nutrient medium for the rapid growth and colonization of the fungus.

The main symptom is the appearance of a black or dark grey velvety layer on the surface of plant parts. Initially, it may look like small spots, but as the mycelium spreads, it can cover entire leaves and stems, turning them into a black, soot-covered mass. The coating can be easily rubbed off, but if the underlying cause (the insect population) is not removed, it will promptly return.

Optimal conditions for the development of Antennulariellaceae include high humidity, stagnant air, and warm temperatures. Poor pruning and dense foliage provide perfect microclimates for these fungi to thrive. Since they rely on honeydew, any environment that promotes the survival of sap-sucking insect populations will inevitably lead to an outbreak of this fungal disease.

The harm caused by this condition is primarily physiological. The black layer physically blocks sunlight, preventing photosynthesis and stifling gas exchange through the stomata. This leads to weakened plant vigor, chlorosis, reduced fruit quality, and in severe cases, the premature shedding of leaves. Consistent management is vital to maintaining the health and aesthetic value of the garden.
