Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Antherospora scillae, a specialized pathogen belonging to the smut fungi group. It specifically targets the reproductive structures of Scilla species, severely impacting the plant's ability to produce viable seeds through the infection of its anthers.
The infection manifests primarily within the flower. The fungus replaces the normal pollen inside the anthers with a dense mass of black, dusty teliospores. While the vegetative parts of the plant often remain unaffected and continue to grow, the flower's reproductive tissues are completely destroyed by the pathogen's mycelium.
Symptoms are most visible during the blooming period. Anthers appear discolored and swollen before rupturing to release the fungal spores. This dispersal mechanism allows the fungus to spread rapidly across the planting area, facilitated by wind currents or visiting pollinators that carry the spores to healthy blossoms.
Environmental conditions, particularly moisture levels during the early spring, play a critical role in the development of the disease. Cool and humid weather conditions are optimal for spore germination and subsequent colonization of developing buds. The fungus is persistent and can survive as spores in the soil or on dormant bulbs.
Management strategies focus on strict sanitation and the use of healthy starting material. Growers should conduct visual inspections during the flowering stage and remove any infected plants immediately to limit spore dispersal. Furthermore, using fungicides as a bulb treatment can help reduce the risk of introducing the pathogen into clean garden beds.
