Anthostoma blight is a fungal disease caused by species of the genus Anthostoma, which primarily impacts the bark and wood tissues of various deciduous trees. This pathogen is often associated with the decline of weakened woody plants, acting as a parasite that exploits compromised physiological states to colonize the host's outer layers.
Common hosts include several hardwood species such as oak, beech, and hazel. The fungi tend to invade through physical wounds, frost cracks, or insect-damaged areas of the bark, where they establish themselves and begin to break down woody tissue, eventually disrupting the plant's ability to transport nutrients.
Key symptoms include the development of dark, erumpent stroma that break through the bark's surface, creating a rough and blackened appearance. Affected branches exhibit patches of necrotic tissue, cracking, and eventual dieback. In advanced stages of infection, the foliage may wilt or shed prematurely as the vascular system becomes increasingly compromised by the fungal activity.
The spread of the disease is facilitated by wet and humid environmental conditions, which favor spore dispersal and germination. Dense stands of trees with poor air circulation are particularly vulnerable to outbreaks. The fungus thrives in shaded, moist environments where the bark remains damp for extended periods, providing a perfect substrate for the pathogen to thrive.
Management strategies focus on strict sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected branches to reduce the inoculum load. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization, avoiding physical damage during maintenance, and ensuring good air circulation within the canopy are essential preventive measures. Chemical control, using copper-based fungicides, can be applied in high-value areas to suppress further spore production during the early spring.
