In agronomic terms, it is not classified as a plant pathogen; instead, it is a pyrophilic fungus, which means it thrives in environments that have recently been subjected to fire or high-temperature treatments, such as steam-sterilized greenhouse soils.
The biological cycle of this fungus involves the development of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies known as apothecia. These are typically bright orange to reddish-brown in color. They act as decomposers of organic matter in the soil and are particularly adept at colonizing nutrient-rich substrates where competing microbial life has been depleted by sterilization.
This fungus primarily appears in greenhouse settings where commercial growers utilize heat-treatment or steam pasteurization to eradicate soil-borne pests. While the fungus itself does not infect or damage the root systems of living crops, its sudden appearance can signify an ecological imbalance in the soil, often linked to excessive moisture and lack of beneficial microbial diversity.
Symptoms of its presence include the appearance of small, disc-shaped structures on the surface of the soil or potting mix. Because Anthracobia melaloma is a saprotroph, it does not directly cause disease symptoms like chlorosis, necrosis, or wilt. However, its presence might correlate with the conditions that also favor the damping-off of seedlings, if pathogens are introduced into the sterilized substrate.
Prevention and control strategies focus on restoring the beneficial microbial community rather than chemical intervention. The most effective method is the inoculation of soil with biological fungicides containing Trichoderma species. These beneficial organisms naturally outcompete the fungus for space and nutrients, effectively preventing its development in professional substrates.
