Description

Antrodia is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Polyporales, which is recognized as a major cause of brown rot in various tree species. These fungi are potent wood-decay organisms capable of breaking down cellulose, causing the internal structure of the tree to weaken and eventually collapse.

The host range of Antrodia is quite broad, affecting primarily conifers such as pines and spruces, though certain species also colonize deciduous trees. The pathogen generally targets weakened or damaged wood, making stressed trees in forests or orchards particularly vulnerable to colonization.

The characteristic symptoms include the presence of fungal fruiting bodies, typically perennial or annual conks, emerging from the tree trunk or branches. The internal damage is diagnostic: the wood becomes friable, brittle, and develops deep, cubical cracks characteristic of advanced brown rot stages. Over time, the structural integrity of the tree is permanently compromised.

The development and spread of Antrodia are facilitated by moist, cool environmental conditions and the availability of open wounds in the tree bark. Spores are primarily dispersed through the air currents and raindrops, allowing the fungus to colonize new hosts rapidly. Improper pruning practices can also leave trees vulnerable to infection by this persistent pathogen.

Effective management requires a proactive approach centered on sanitation. Removing infected wood, properly sealing pruning cuts, and maintaining overall tree vigor through adequate fertilization are essential strategies. In cases of advanced decay, infected trees should be removed and destroyed to mitigate the risk of spore production and infection of nearby healthy vegetation.
