In its natural biological cycle, it functions primarily as a saprotroph, colonizing dead wood, fallen logs, and standing dead trees, though it can opportunistically infect weakened living timber in favorable environments.

The propagation of the fungus is primarily driven by the wind-dispersed basidiospores. These spores are capable of traveling long distances and infiltrating wood through bark fissures, broken branches, or unprotected cross-cuts, initiating new colonies.
