Description

Antrodia vaillantii, commonly known as the mine fungus, is a species of basidiomycete fungus responsible for causing severe brown rot in timber. While primarily known for damaging building structures, it poses a significant threat to agricultural storage facilities, greenhouses, and wooden agricultural infrastructure where high humidity is frequently maintained.

The fungus typically attacks softwood species, though it can affect a wide range of wooden materials. It thrives in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces, colonizing wood surfaces and penetrating deep into the cellular structure. This process compromises the mechanical integrity of the wood, leading to structural failures in warehouses and barns.

Symptoms include the formation of thick, white, cotton-like mycelial mats on the surface of the timber. As the infection progresses, white or cream-colored fruit bodies develop. The affected wood darkens into a deep brown hue, shrinks, and cracks into characteristic cubic patterns, eventually losing its strength and becoming friable.

Protection and prevention measures center on moisture control through improved airflow and environmental regulation within agricultural facilities. It is critical to use pressure-treated timber with approved fungicides, isolate wood from direct ground contact, and perform regular inspections to identify and remove any early signs of mycelial colonization before widespread damage occurs.
