Aphanocladium is a fungal disease caused by members of the Aphanocladium genus. These fungi are known for their opportunistic nature, frequently acting as hyperparasites of other fungi, but they are also capable of infecting the tissues of various high-value crops, leading to significant physiological stress and structural damage.

The host range for this pathogen includes various vegetable crops and cultivated fungi, most notably mushrooms, where it causes the condition often referred to as cobweb mold. In field crops, it may infect seedlings or wounded parts of mature plants, exploiting weakened immune systems or poor agricultural conditions to establish its colony.

The primary clinical signs of an Aphanocladium infection include the formation of a white, web-like mycelial mat on the surface of the plant or growing medium. As the infection progresses, the tissues underneath the mold appear discolored and water-soaked, eventually leading to rapid tissue death (necrosis) and overall wilting of the affected plant parts.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the proliferation of the disease. High relative humidity, inadequate air circulation, and warm temperatures are the primary drivers of spore dissemination and mycelial growth. In controlled environments like greenhouses, the pathogen can spread rapidly from a single focal point if sanitary protocols are ignored.

Effective management requires a combination of hygiene and chemical control. Growers should prioritize improving air flow to reduce moisture levels on foliage and surfaces. Regular sterilization of tools and the substrate is essential to break the disease cycle. In severe cases, targeted fungicide applications are necessary to prevent further losses and protect the integrity of the remaining crop.
