Aphelaria is a genus of fungi belonging to the Clavariaceae family that can act as a pathogen under specific environmental conditions. While primarily recognized as saprotrophs, these fungi can colonize weakened plant tissues, turning into opportunistic parasites that negatively impact plant health.
The causative agent of the disease is the Aphelaria fungus, which belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum. The disease type is characterized by the formation of complex, branched fruiting bodies on the surface of plant stems and roots, causing gradual necrosis and decomposition of the affected plant tissues.
This fungus typically affects vegetable crops, berry bushes, and various ornamental plants. It is most commonly found in damp, poorly ventilated areas where moisture accumulates on the soil surface or the lower parts of the plants, creating a perfect environment for the pathogen to thrive.
Symptoms include the appearance of coral-like fungal structures on the base of stems or near the roots. As the infection progresses, the colonized tissue becomes brown, soft, and watery. Eventually, the plant may lose its structural integrity, leading to stunted growth, yellowing of leaves, and premature death of the affected area.
