Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Apiospora camptospora, which belongs to the Sordariomycetes class. This pathogen is primarily known as a saprotroph that can switch to a parasitic mode of life under favorable conditions, attacking stressed or weakened plant tissues.
Cereal crops, such as wheat, barley, and various grasses, are the most common hosts for this fungus. The pathogen spreads across leaves, stems, and spikes, utilizing the moist environment within the crop canopy to colonize plant surfaces effectively.
Symptoms of the infection manifest as dark spots, necrosis, or general discoloration of the plant tissues. As the disease progresses, small black fruiting bodies (perithecia) appear on the affected areas. Infected plants exhibit wilting, reduced photosynthetic activity, and a rapid decline in vigor.
The development and spread of Apiospora camptospora are heavily influenced by high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Dense crop stands are particularly susceptible, as poor air circulation facilitates the spread of spores throughout the field.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, primarily due to yield losses and compromised grain quality. Affected plants produce stunted or shriveled kernels, which results in lower test weights and reduced germination rates, impacting the overall profitability of the harvest.
