Apple stem grooving is a viral disease caused by the Apple stem grooving virus (ASGV), a member of the Capillovirus genus. This pathogen is known for its systemic impact on host plants, where it colonizes the vascular tissues, specifically affecting the phloem and xylem development, which ultimately compromises the overall tree vitality.

The primary host for this virus is the domesticated apple tree (Malus domestica), although it can also infect pears and various other Rosaceae species. The infection is frequently asymptomatic, which means the tree acts as a silent reservoir of the pathogen, contributing to the spread of the virus within nurseries and commercial orchards without growers noticing the danger early on.

Symptoms are typically revealed when the bark is removed, exposing deep longitudinal grooves and pits in the wood surface, particularly near the graft union. Other visible signs include stunted growth, chlorosis of the foliage, reduced fruit size, and premature leaf drop. Severe infections may lead to localized necrosis, graft incompatibility, and eventual tree decline or death.

Transmission of ASGV is primarily achieved through grafting activities using infected scion wood or rootstocks. Mechanical transmission can also occur through contaminated pruning tools or machinery if sap from an infected plant reaches healthy tissue. While some studies suggest possible spread through nematodes, the human-mediated propagation in nurseries remains the most significant route of global dissemination.
