Description

Arachnion is a genus of fungi belonging to the family Agaricaceae. While many species are saprotrophic, in agricultural environments, they can occasionally act as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the health of crops by colonizing the root zone and stems, particularly when the host plant is stressed or weakened by environmental factors.

The causative agent of the disorder is the fungal mycelium that thrives in moist, organic-rich environments. The disease mechanism often involves the secretion of metabolic byproducts that stress the plant root system, inhibiting nutrient uptake and making the crop more susceptible to secondary infections by other, more aggressive pathogens.

Common symptoms include the presence of small, globose fruiting bodies appearing on the soil surface near the stem base. Affected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and wilting during the peak of the day. In advanced stages, the root system may show signs of decay or localized necrosis, which disrupts the vascular supply.

Development and spread of Arachnion are highly dependent on soil moisture levels and organic content. High humidity, poor soil aeration, and warm temperatures create an environment where the fungus can rapidly colonize debris and eventually infest the rhizosphere of surrounding crops. Poor crop rotation practices further contribute to the accumulation of fungal spores in the soil.

Effective protection strategies require a multi-faceted approach. Primary measures include improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging, deep plowing to incorporate and decompose organic residues, and the application of biological controls like Trichoderma species to suppress fungal development. Regular monitoring is essential to detect the appearance of fruiting bodies early.
