Description

Armillaria luteobubalina is a highly destructive species of basidiomycete fungus that acts as a primary pathogen, causing severe root rot in a wide variety of woody plants. Unlike secondary opportunistic fungi, this species is capable of invading and killing healthy, vigorous trees, posing a major threat to forestry, orchards, and native ecosystems.

The host range is extensive, including species such as Eucalyptus, Acacia, and many ornamental and fruit-bearing trees. The fungus is particularly prevalent in Australia, where it is recognized as a significant cause of ecosystem decline due to its ability to spread aggressively through soil and between tree root systems.

Symptoms of infection include wilting, yellowing of foliage, premature leaf drop, and dieback of the tree crown. A diagnostic feature is the presence of creamy-white mycelial mats under the bark near the root collar and the formation of dark, shoe-string-like structures known as rhizomorphs, which grow through the soil to seek out new host roots.

The development of this disease is favored by moist soil conditions and the presence of organic matter, which the fungus uses as a nutritional base. The pathogen spreads primarily through physical contact between infected roots and healthy ones, or by rhizomorphs traversing the soil, making it a very persistent soil-borne threat.

Control strategies are primarily preventative, focusing on site sanitation and the removal of infected trees, including their stumps and major root systems. Chemical control is rarely successful, so foresters and gardeners emphasize creating physical barriers, avoiding the spread of contaminated soil, and managing tree health to minimize vulnerability to infection.
