Description
Dark honey fungus (Armillaria obscura) is a destructive fungal pathogen responsible for causing white root and butt rot in a wide variety of woody plants. As a necrotrophic pathogen, it invades the vascular tissues of trees, eventually leading to the death of the host by disrupting the transport of nutrients and water.
This fungus exhibits a broad host range, affecting both coniferous and broad-leaved tree species. It is particularly problematic in orchards established on former forest lands, where the persistence of infected stumps and deep-seated roots provides a continuous reservoir of inoculum that easily infects new tree plantings.
Key indicators of infection include canopy thinning, chlorosis, and the sudden decline of the tree. A definitive diagnosis is often made by peeling back the bark at the root collar, where the characteristic white mycelial fans and dark, shoelace-like rhizomorphs are found. These structures are the primary diagnostic features of the infection.
The development of the disease is heavily influenced by soil moisture levels and the health status of the host tree. Armillaria obscura thrives in environments where tree stress is high due to drought, defoliation, or physical injury. The rhizomorphs allow the fungus to traverse the soil independently, facilitating the spread between adjacent tree roots.
Integrated disease management focuses primarily on prevention rather than cure. Essential practices include the thorough removal of stumps and roots prior to planting, the installation of physical barriers to block rhizomorph movement, and ensuring tree vigor through proper horticultural care. Once a tree is severely infected, removal and destruction of the root system are necessary to prevent further spread.
