Arthonia is a genus of fungi that frequently exist as lichens, colonizing the bark of trees and shrubs. In agricultural practice, their presence on fruit-bearing trees is often regarded as a clear indicator of physiological stress, poor tree maintenance, or lack of proper ventilation within the canopy.
The causal agents are fungi belonging to the order Arthoniales. These organisms are typically considered epiphytic, relying on the bark as a surface for attachment rather than deriving nutrients directly from the living tissues. However, their prolonged presence creates a physical barrier that impacts the tree's health and creates microhabitats for other harmful organisms.
Key crops susceptible to Arthonia colonization include various species of pome and stone fruit trees, such as apples, pears, and plums. Symptoms appear as flattened or slightly raised patches on the bark. These spots, often ranging in color from gray to brown, house the fungal reproductive structures known as apothecia, which allow the organism to spread via spores in moist conditions.
Development and spread are favored by high humidity levels, poor air circulation, and the presence of old or necrotic bark. Gardens that lack regular maintenance, such as pruning and cleaning, provide an ideal environment for Arthonia to establish. The growth is particularly aggressive in shaded areas where moisture persists on the trunks for extended periods.
The economic impact of Arthonia is primarily indirect. By forming a dense covering on the bark, these lichens interfere with gas exchange and create a protective layer for pests and pathogens to hide and thrive. This accumulation often accelerates the decline of older trees, reduces yearly vegetative growth, and can lead to lower fruit yields over time.
