This organism primarily colonizes the bark of various deciduous and coniferous trees. It thrives on mature, thick bark surfaces that offer stability and moisture retention. In an agricultural context, it serves as an indicator that the tree surface is frequently damp and potentially lacking in vigorous annual bark shedding.
Symptoms appear as small, flat, black, and often irregular, map-like markings on the bark surface. These spots do not immediately kill the host tissue, but they occupy space and create an environment that can harbor other pests, mites, or opportunistic fungi that may eventually cause more significant structural damage to the bark.
The development of Arthonia atra is driven by high humidity, poor air circulation, and low light exposure in the canopy. These environmental factors prevent the bark from drying out after rainfall, providing a perfect substrate for the spores to germinate and colonize the surface layers of the tree trunk and main branches.
