Arthopyrenia is a genus of fungi that often colonizes the bark of trees. In agronomy, these fungi are frequently identified as part of the epiphytic complex that grows on the surface of woody plants. While they are not always primary pathogens, their presence indicates unfavorable conditions that can lead to long-term tree decline.
The disease is caused by Ascomycete fungi that inhabit the outer layers of the tree bark. They typically thrive in environments with high humidity and poor air circulation. By settling on the tree, they disrupt the normal gas exchange of the bark and provide shelter for various insect pests and secondary pathogens to hibernate.
Trees most commonly affected include apple, pear, and various ornamental species. Older trees with rough, stagnant bark are more susceptible to colonization. The development of Arthopyrenia is significantly favored by dense, unpruned canopies that trap moisture and prevent the bark from drying out after rainfall.
Symptoms are characterized by the appearance of minute black dots, known as perithecia, scattered across the bark surface. In advanced cases, the bark may become brittle, develop fine cracks, or appear discolored and rough. These visual signs often signal that the tree's vitality is decreasing and requires immediate cultural intervention.
