Arthopyrenia cerasi is a specialized lichenized fungus that commonly colonizes the bark of various fruit trees, particularly those within the Prunus genus. While often considered a minor epiphytic growth, its presence is a significant indicator of environmental conditions in the orchard and can be detrimental to bark health over time.

The pathogen, classified under the Arthopyreniaceae family, predominantly targets stone fruit trees such as cherries and sour cherries. It relies on the bark surface as a substrate for its thallus, which can persist throughout the year, slowly expanding its coverage area during periods of favorable humidity.

The primary symptoms include the appearance of small, dark grey to olive-brown patches on the bark of trunks and main branches. As the colony grows, the bark underneath may become hardened, lose its flexibility, and potentially develop cracks, which exposes the tree to secondary fungal and bacterial infections.

The development and spread of Arthopyrenia cerasi are heavily influenced by high humidity levels and poor air circulation within the tree canopy. Gardens with inadequate maintenance, such as lack of pruning or overcrowding, provide an optimal environment for the spores to land and establish new colonies on the tree surfaces.
