Description
Arthrocladiella is a genus of fungi belonging to the Erysiphaceae family. The most important species is Arthrocladiella mougeotii, which is specifically recognized as the pathogen responsible for powdery mildew on hops (Humulus lupulus). It is an obligate biotroph that relies exclusively on the living host tissue for survival.
The primary symptom of the infection is the appearance of a white, powdery fungal growth on the leaves and sometimes the stems of the plant. As the fungus matures, this white mycelium can thicken and turn greyish-brown. In severe cases, the infected leaves become brittle, curl, and may drop prematurely, leading to significant defoliation.
The impact of this disease on agricultural production is substantial. In hop farming, the infection directly interferes with the photosynthesis process, causing stunted growth and reducing the yield and quality of the cones. Since the quality of hops is critical for the brewing industry, even a mild infection can result in significant financial losses for producers.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions. The fungus thrives in warm, humid weather, where moderate temperatures promote rapid mycelial growth and conidial production. Spores are primarily wind-dispersed, allowing the pathogen to move rapidly across fields during the peak growing season.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as pruning lower leaves to improve airflow, balancing nitrogen fertilization to avoid excessive vegetative growth, and removing infested crop debris are essential. Chemical control, including the application of sulfur-based fungicides or demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides, is frequently employed during high-risk periods to prevent widespread outbreaks.
