Description
Ascochyta blight is a devastating fungal disease caused by various species of the Ascochyta genus. It affects a broad range of plant families, notably legumes such as chickpeas, peas, and lentils, as well as several vegetable crops. The pathogen is highly destructive and can lead to significant yield losses if not managed appropriately.
The fungus survives between seasons on crop debris, within soil, and inside infected seeds as mycelium or pycnidia. The disease cycle is driven by the production of asexual spores known as pycnidiospores, which are spread by rain splash and wind. These spores land on healthy plant tissues, germinate in the presence of moisture, and penetrate the host plant, initiating new infection cycles.
Symptoms are typically characterized by necrotic lesions that appear on leaves, stems, and pods. These spots often start as small, water-soaked dots that expand into larger, circular or irregular lesions with a distinct dark margin and a tan or grey center. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of numerous small, black, pinhead-sized fruiting bodies (pycnidia) embedded within the center of these lesions.
The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, with high humidity and moderate temperatures being the primary drivers. Extended rainy weather during the growing season significantly increases the risk of rapid disease spread. Densely planted fields or greenhouses with poor air circulation create microclimates that accelerate spore dispersal and infection rates.
Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes:
- Utilizing certified, disease-free seed stocks.
- Treating seeds with fungicides before planting.
- Implementing long-term crop rotation to reduce soil-borne inoculum.
- Incorporating crop residues into the soil to promote decomposition.
- Applying protective or systemic fungicides when environmental conditions favor disease onset.
