Ascagilis leaf spot of sunflower

Ascagilis sunyatsenii

Description

Ascagilis leaf spot of sunflower is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Ascagilis sunyatsenii. This pathogen significantly impacts the physiological processes of the plant, primarily affecting the leaves, which reduces the overall photosynthetic capacity and weakens the entire crop structure.

The primary host for this pathogen is the cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The disease typically manifests during the vegetative stages, though it can persist into the reproductive stages, directly impacting grain filling and final seed quality if the infection level is high.

Symptoms initially appear as localized lesions or spots that vary in color from light grey to brown. As the fungus Ascagilis sunyatsenii matures, small, dark fruiting bodies known as pycnidia develop within these necrotic areas, which serve as the primary mechanism for spore dispersal through rain splash and wind.

The development of the disease is heavily dependent on weather conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. These environmental factors create an ideal microclimate within the canopy for the fungus to multiply and spread to adjacent healthy tissues.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize economic losses. Key strategies include the selection of resistant hybrids, deep plowing to bury infected crop residues, and the application of fungicides during early symptoms. Crop rotation is also essential to reduce the primary inoculum load in the field.
