Aschersonia aleyrodis is an entomopathogenic fungus widely recognized in agriculture for its ability to regulate populations of harmful insects. Unlike plant pathogens, this fungus targets specific pests, acting as a natural biological control agent rather than a disease of plants.

The fungus primarily attacks whiteflies, such as the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum). When spores come into contact with a susceptible larva, they germinate and penetrate the host's cuticle. Once inside, the fungus consumes the insect's internal tissues, effectively neutralizing the pest population.

Symptoms of the infection on pests are easily observable: the larvae become covered with stroma, which appear as white, yellow, or bright orange fungal cushions. These structures contain thousands of spores, which are subsequently released to spread the infection to other whiteflies within the canopy of the plants.
